Competent authority for visa applications

When to apply
- Ideally between 3 months and 1 month before the intended date of departure; processing times can indeed differ according to various factors
- Some visa applications require a transfer to the Belgian Immigration Office, implying a longer decision time.
How to apply
- Define the correct travel purpose to define the type of visa you wish to apply for: see the website of the Immigration Office.
- Collect all required documents for your application as described on the website of the Belgian Immigration office and/or consult our checklists for the most common types of visa. You can find them here (link naar pagina/onderaan pagina). In case of discrepancies, you should presume the information of the Immigration Office to be correct.
- You cannot find your travel purpose? Contact us via lisbon.visa@diplobel.fed.be sending a copy of your valid passport and your valid Portugese residence permit
- Each visa applicant must create his own account in VisaOnWeb: fill out and submit a visa application form.
- Once the form was submitted, a pdf version of the application will be sent to your mailbox. Print, sign and bring it with you to your appointment at the Consulate General along with the required documents.
How to book an appointment
- Choose a date and time to submit your complete application in person at our Consulate General. Visa-On-Web will offer this possibility once you have filled out your complete application.
- Bring the printed and signed application form to your appointment as well as the required documents
- Are you travelling as part of a group and do you wish to book a group appointment?
- Use one login to fill out several application forms
- Choose ‘yes’ under ‘are your travelling in a group’
- Fill out an application form for each member – ‘new application in the group’ meaning one VOW number per applicant
- You will now be able to book a group appointment
- Important: You will have to appear twice in person at the Embassy: once to introduce your application and have your biometric data registered (appointment made by you via Visa on Web) and once to retrieve your visa decision. You will be notified and asked to book a second appointment.
Fees and payment details
Most of the time, you have to pay two types of fees: a contribution fee and a handling fee.
Remark: Some applicants are exempt from one or both fee(s).
Contribution fee
A visa application administrative fee must be paid to the Immigration Department before you submit the visa application. You must bring the proof of payment to the appointment.
Please consult the Immigration Office website to identify the amount of the fee per type of visa and follow the payment procedure.
Handling fee
When submitting the visa for long stay application at the Belgian Consulate General, you will pay €180 consular fee per applicant at the counter (card payment only). Some applicants are exempted. Please send us an e-mail for more details.

Privacy statement. Processing of personal data in the context of a visa application
Implementation of visa biometrics starting 20 November 2015
Starting November 20th, 2015, all applicants for a Schengen visa will need to personally present themselves in order to have their biometric date registered.
Visa applications will be processed faster thanks to the use of biometrics (finger prints and a digital photograph). It will allow visa holders to be identified faster and this way identity theft can be countered.
The procedure to take finger prints is easy, quick and discrete. The applicant will only have to place his or her fingers on the digital scanner. If he or she wants to reapply for a visa within five years, new finger printing will not be required: the previous data stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) will be re-used. After five years the finger print data will be deleted.
When a visa holder arrives at the border, Schengen border control officers will use the VIS to check the identity and verify if the visa is genuine. Quick, easy and reliable biometric checks will help to prevent visa fraud. Honest applicants, the clear majority, will therefore be able to go through a faster procedure.
